Art is my fascination and obsession; I shape my art to reflect what I am feeling and seeing. My goal is to produce artwork that takes on a life of its own, much as the children we birth grow into unique people. My admiration for art was ignited by my grandmother, who cherished me with the short life that she lived. I aspire to create work like hers. Though she is not here with me today, I channel all my love for her into my own work.
Each piece I create has its own world, language, and body. I make my decisions based on how I want my final piece to present itself. If I want my piece to look organic, I use materials that would be harvested from the earth and only use natural colors that are native to the piece. As if the work were in its own world, I use mixed media to illustrate the world created.
When I first started making art, I felt like a fraud. I felt like I was making art to make other people happy. I enjoyed the process but not the work itself. It was all a mess of ideas about what other people thought art was. Now that I have decided to make art pieces that reflect me, I have noticed a shift in my work. I ask those who want my work to have faith in me and the skills I've gained through my studies and experiences. I am always researching for my next inspiration piece, taking pictures of things I want to make, or even getting inspiration from others and their works. Through research I can make perfections and flaws with intention. With my hands, I challenge myself to make each piece its own living world, telling a story to others without a single spoken word.
